Definition: Coming from Greek, “tauto” means the same, and the other half of the word,“logos”, means a word or an idea, thus tautology literally means repeating the same words or ideas. Tautology in grammar is the repetitive and redundant use of similar phrases and words. A tautology is the expression and restatement of the same thing, saying, idea or words at least two times in a phrase, sentence, or paragraph using different words. Typically tautologies are used to emphasize the repeated word or idea to the audience.

Example: “If I perish, I perish” (Esther 4:15)

The tautology in this verse from the Bible is the repetitive use of the word perish.
