Definition: Petty means to have little or no importance or consequence. But at times, petty can be making something otherwise insignificant into something bigger to suit one’s own agenda. When people blow silly, insignificant situations out of proportion, they and or the situation is considered petty. Also, it is an attitude marked by narrowness of mind, ideas, or views.
Example: An example of a person who often blows things out of proportion is Taylor Swift, as many of her songs are dramatic attacks to her ex-boyfriends, but one performance in particular that really exemplified being petty was her “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” performance where she imitated her ex-boyfriend, Harry Styles, and used a British accent when she recited the lines, “So he calls me up and he’s like “I still love you” and I’m like I’m just sick of this, I mean this is exhausting, we are NEVER getting back together like EVER”. After that, when she won an award for the song, she quickly turned her acceptance speech into an opportunity to slam her ex by saying,“I also wanna thank the person who inspired the song, who knows exactly who he is, because now I got one of these!”
