Personification

Definition: Personification is a figurative device used to give a thing, idea, or animal human characteristics. Furthermore, the non-human object is portrayed in a way that makes it act in a human way. Personification is a type of metaphor. Metaphor is the overall figurative device that applies a certain quality or action to something that is not actually possible. A personification is a type of metaphor because it specifically applies human characteristic to a non-human object.

Example:  "Earth felt the wound; and Nature from her seat, Sighing, through all her works, gave signs of woe.”  - (Paradise Lost, John Milton)
